Golf league format
Team match play with points
In team match play with points, two-person teams meet each week and each golfer plays one opponent. Every hole is worth 1 point to the winner, half a point to each side on a tie, and the team with the lower combined net score earns 2 bonus points, so a nine-hole match is worth 20 points.
- Who plays
- Two-person teams, in a weekly round robin
- Scoring
- 1 point a hole, half a point for a tie, 2 for low team net
- Handicap allowance
- 100% in individual matchups, 90% in best ball matchups
- Best for
- Weekly nine-hole leagues with a full season of standings
The rules
- Each team has two golfers. The lower handicap golfer on each team plays the other team’s lower handicap golfer, and the higher plays the higher. That is A against A and B against B.
- Every hole in each matchup is worth 1 point to the winner. A halved hole gives half a point to each side. Nine holes with two matchups give 18 hole points.
- The team with the lower combined net total for both golfers earns 2 more points. A tie splits it 1 and 1. The total on a nine is 20 points.
- All the holes are played, so every hole counts. Each team’s points feed the season standings, ranked by points, then wins, then lowest average net.
- Every point value is a setting. Some leagues also award points for winning each matchup overall.
Recommended handicap allowance
Gimme’s default is 100% of the course handicap for individual matchups, with each golfer receiving their own full strokes. That keeps the net totals consistent with the low team net bonus. If the matchups are best ball, the default is 90%.
A strokes-off-the-low option is available for leagues that prefer it. Pick one stroke method and use it all season.
Worked example: Pat and Lee against Sam and Alex
Pat and Lee play Sam and Alex over nine holes. Pat plays Sam and Lee plays Alex, because each team puts its lower handicap golfer first. Every golfer receives their full strokes.
| Matchup | Result | Pat and Lee | Sam and Alex |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: Pat v Sam | Sam and Alex 1 UP | 4 | 5 |
| B: Lee v Alex | Sam and Alex 1 UP | 4 | 5 |
| Low team net | 74 v 72 | 0 | 2 |
| Total | 8 | 12 |
A ends 1 UP for Sam and Alex and B ends 1 UP for Sam and Alex. Hole points are 8 to 10. Combined net totals are 74 for Pat and Lee and 72 for Sam and Alex, so Sam and Alex earns the 2 point bonus.
The final score is 8 to 12, Sam and Alex wins, and the 20 points always add up. Sam and Alex takes 12 points toward the standings and Pat and Lee takes 8.
When to use team match play with points
- A weekly nine-hole league where each team plays a different opponent every week.
- Leagues that want both head-to-head competition and a team total.
- Clubs and courses that run a Thursday or Tuesday night league.
- Leagues that need a full season of standings with playoffs at the end.
Common disputes and how to settle them
Write these answers into your league rules before the season. Most arguments on league night come from a rule nobody wrote down.
- Who plays whom?
- Rank each team’s golfers by playing handicap. Lowest plays lowest, highest plays highest. If handicaps tie, use the order the team listed them.
- A golfer is absent. What happens?
- Use a sub with a handicap set by league rules, or a blind score such as the team’s average. Do not let a team forfeit points for an absence if the rules offer a sub pool.
- Can two golfers play the same hole in different matchups?
- Yes. Both matchups are played at the same time. Each golfer’s score is used in their own matchup and in the team net total.
- What happens if the match is rained out?
- Common choices are to play it next week, cancel it, or move it to a make-up week. Write the policy in the rules before the season.
Questions
How many points are there in a nine-hole team match?
With 1 point a hole, two matchups and a 2 point bonus, a nine-hole match is worth 20 points. Gimme checks that both teams’ points add up to that total.
How are the standings ranked?
By total points, then most wins, then lowest average net score. Teams that are still level share a rank.
Can we change the point values?
Yes. Points per hole won, per hole halved, per matchup won and for low team net are all settings.
What is a good team size for this format?
Two golfers per team is the classic. Teams of four are possible with aggregate or best ball matchups.
How does a bye week score?
A bye adds a set number of points, zero by default. Some leagues give a bye the team’s average.
