Golf league format

Skins

In skins, each hole has a prize and the golfer with the lowest score on the hole, all alone, wins it. A tie wins nothing. With carryover, a tied hole’s skin rolls to the next hole, so a later hole can be worth several skins.

The rules

  • Everyone puts in the same buy-in. The pot is the buy-in times the number of golfers.
  • A hole is won by the one golfer with the lowest score on it. If two or more golfers tie for the lowest score, nobody wins it.
  • With carryover, the skin from a tied hole is added to the next hole. Without it, a tied hole is dead.
  • Net skins subtract handicap strokes by stroke index. Gross skins use the score as played. Many leagues play both and split the pot 50/50.
  • Skins still carried after the last hole are not awarded. The pot is shared among the skins actually won.

Recommended handicap allowance

Net skins use the full playing handicap by default. Half strokes are a popular option: halve the playing handicap, round once with a half rounding up, and use the strokes on the hardest holes. It keeps the high handicap golfers from winning too many holes.

There is no official allowance for skins. Pick one, and apply it to the whole league.

Worked example: four golfers, $10 each

Four golfers play net skins on the front nine with carryover on. Each puts in $10, so the pot is $40. Pat receives 2 strokes, Lee 5, Sam 8 and Alex 0.

PayoutsPat $13.33, Lee $17.78, Sam $4.45, Alex $4.44

9 skins are awarded in all. Pat wins 3, Lee wins 4, Sam wins 1 and Alex wins 1. Each skin is worth about $4.44. The pot does not split into whole cents, so the largest remainder rule decides where the last cents go and the payouts add back to exactly $40.00.

When to use skins

  • A weekly side game on any league night.
  • Outings and member-guest events as a second contest.
  • A way to keep high handicap golfers interested, with net skins.
  • A pot you want tracked in a ledger, with buy-ins and payouts recorded.

Common disputes and how to settle them

Write these answers into your league rules before the season. Most arguments on league night come from a rule nobody wrote down.

Do skins carry over if nobody wins a hole?
Only if your rules say so. Decide before the season. With carryover, ties build bigger skins and swing the pot. Without it, every hole is worth the same.
What if the last holes are tied and skins are still carried?
Those skins are not awarded. The pot is divided among the skins won. Some groups play a sudden-death hole, so write the rule down.
Gross or net skins?
Net skins give every golfer a shot. Gross skins go to the low handicap golfers. Playing both with a 50/50 split is a common compromise.
Can a golfer who picked up win a hole?
No. A golfer with no score on a hole cannot win it. The lowest score among golfers who finished the hole decides it.

Questions

How do skins work in golf?

Every hole is a prize. The golfer with the lowest score alone wins the hole. A tie wins nothing, and with carryover its skin moves to the next hole.

How much is a skin worth?

The pot divided by the number of skins won. Four golfers at $10 make a $40 pot. If 10 skins are won, each is worth $4.

What is a validation skin?

Some groups require the winner of a hole to tie or win the next hole to validate it. That is a house rule, not part of the standard format.

Can I run skins for the whole league?

Yes. Skins can be scored for each group or across the whole field. Gimme scores skins per round and tracks the buy-ins and payouts in a ledger.

Where can I try the numbers?

The free skins calculator scores any round hole by hole, with gross, net, half strokes and carryover.
