Golf league format
Scramble
In a scramble every golfer on the team hits, the team picks the best shot, and everyone plays their next shot from that spot. A four-person scramble handicap commonly takes 25%, 20%, 15% and 10% of the four course handicaps, lowest to highest, and a two-person team takes 35% of the lower plus 15% of the higher.

The rules
- Every golfer tees off. The team chooses the best drive and marks the spot.
- Every golfer plays the next shot from within a set distance of that spot, commonly one club length and no nearer the hole. The team keeps choosing the best shot until the ball is holed.
- On the green, all golfers putt from the spot of the best previous putt, or from the same ball position.
- The team records one score for the hole. Total the holes for the round.
- Most events require a minimum number of drives from each golfer, often two or three in 18 holes, so a long hitter cannot carry the team.
Recommended handicap allowance
A scramble team scores far better than any one of its golfers, so the team handicap is a small share of each member’s course handicap. Sort the golfers lowest to highest and take a percentage of each. Common splits are 35% and 15% for two golfers, and 25%, 20%, 15% and 10% for four. For three, 30%, 20% and 10% is a common convention. A lighter four-person split of 20%, 15%, 10% and 5% is also used.
Round once at the end, and a half rounds up. Net score is the team gross minus the team handicap. These are common league defaults, not official rules, and the free scramble handicap calculator takes any percentages you set.
Worked example: a four-person team
A team has course handicaps 6, 11, 17 and 24. At 25%, 20%, 15% and 10% each golfer adds a share, as the table shows.
| Golfer | Course handicap | Share | Adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chris | 6 | 25% | 1.5 |
| Avery | 11 | 20% | 2.2 |
| Dana | 17 | 15% | 2.55 |
| Robin | 24 | 10% | 2.4 |
| Team handicap | 8.65 rounds to 9 |
The shares add up to 8.65, and rounded once the team handicap is 9. If the team shoots 64 gross, the net score is 55. A two-person team with course handicaps 8 and 16 at 35/15 gets 2.8 + 2.4 = 5.2, a team handicap of 5.
When to use scramble
- Charity outings and company events with golfers of every level.
- A league night that is relaxed and fast, with teams drawn at random.
- Rounds where a beginner should be able to contribute.
- Season-end events and member-guests.
Common disputes and how to settle them
Write these answers into your league rules before the season. Most arguments on league night come from a rule nobody wrote down.
- How many drives from each golfer?
- Set a minimum per golfer, such as three drives in 18 holes or two in nine, and state it on the entry sheet. Without it, the longest hitter tees off every time.
- How close to the spot must the next shot be played?
- The usual rule is within one club length, no nearer the hole, and not in a hazard if the spot was not. Write the exact distance in the local rules.
- Which handicap percentages do we use?
- Pick one set and print it on the entry sheet. The common sets are 35/15 for two golfers and 25/20/15/10 for four. A mistake here shows up in the final results, so settle it before the first tee.
- Do we apply the team handicap to every hole?
- For the net total, subtract it once from the gross. If you play hole prizes or skins on the scramble, place the team’s strokes on the hardest holes by stroke index.
Questions
How do you calculate a scramble handicap?
Take each golfer’s course handicap, sort them from lowest to highest, multiply each by its percentage, add the results and round once. The common four-person split is 25%, 20%, 15% and 10%.
What is the difference between a scramble and best ball?
In a scramble the team plays one ball and picks the best shot every time. In best ball each golfer plays their own ball and the team keeps the lowest score. Scramble scores are much lower.
What is a Texas scramble?
Texas scramble is a common name for a scramble with a rule on minimum drives per golfer. Some events use it for a scramble with a team handicap.
What is a shamble?
A shamble starts like a scramble, with the team choosing the best drive, and then everyone plays their own ball into the hole. The team keeps the best one or two scores.
Can a scramble count for league handicaps?
No. A scramble score is a team score and does not reflect an individual round. Keep scrambles out of the handicap record.
