12-Team Golf League Schedule Example (11 Weeks, Full Grid)
Updated
A 12-team golf league schedule takes 11 weeks for every team to play every other team once, with 6 matches each week and 66 in total. The full grid is below, built with the circle method and checked by script.
Below you get the grid, a comparison with what Gimme's free generator produces, a tee time balance table, a 15-week season plan, what to do if a team quits in week 4, and a decision table for season length. Every team and number here is an example.
The full 12-team schedule, week by week
The circle method keeps team 1 fixed and rotates the other 11 seats one place each week. Per the standard round-robin tournament description, an even field of n teams needs n - 1 rounds with n / 2 games in each. For 12 teams that is 11 rounds and 6 games. The columns are just six matches per week, not tee times (tee times come later).
| Week | Match 1 | Match 2 | Match 3 | Match 4 | Match 5 | Match 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 v 12 | 2 v 11 | 3 v 10 | 4 v 9 | 5 v 8 | 6 v 7 |
| 2 | 1 v 11 | 10 v 12 | 2 v 9 | 3 v 8 | 4 v 7 | 5 v 6 |
| 3 | 1 v 10 | 9 v 11 | 8 v 12 | 2 v 7 | 3 v 6 | 4 v 5 |
| 4 | 1 v 9 | 8 v 10 | 7 v 11 | 6 v 12 | 2 v 5 | 3 v 4 |
| 5 | 1 v 8 | 7 v 9 | 6 v 10 | 5 v 11 | 4 v 12 | 2 v 3 |
| 6 | 1 v 7 | 6 v 8 | 5 v 9 | 4 v 10 | 3 v 11 | 2 v 12 |
| 7 | 1 v 6 | 5 v 7 | 4 v 8 | 3 v 9 | 2 v 10 | 11 v 12 |
| 8 | 1 v 5 | 4 v 6 | 3 v 7 | 2 v 8 | 9 v 12 | 10 v 11 |
| 9 | 1 v 4 | 3 v 5 | 2 v 6 | 7 v 12 | 8 v 11 | 9 v 10 |
| 10 | 1 v 3 | 2 v 4 | 5 v 12 | 6 v 11 | 7 v 10 | 8 v 9 |
| 11 | 1 v 2 | 3 v 12 | 4 v 11 | 5 v 10 | 6 v 9 | 7 v 8 |
How the grid was checked
A script generated the 11 weeks, then asserted two things: every one of the 66 possible pairs appears exactly once, and no team appears twice in any week. Do the same arithmetic by hand: 12 x 11 / 2 = 66 pairs, and 11 weeks x 6 matches = 66 matches. If those 66 matches are all different, no pair can be missing. You can run this check on any schedule a volunteer hands you, in any spreadsheet.
Gimme's generator vs the hand grid
Gimme's free golf league schedule generator builds a round robin for 4 to 32 teams. Its code uses the same circle method: one team stays put, the others rotate, and it adds a bye marker for odd counts. Run for 12 teams, it produces the same 66 matches in the same 11 weeks as the grid above. Every week matches, pair for pair.
What it adds is the part the circle method ignores: which tee slot and which nine each match gets. Here is how the two compare.
| Item | Hand grid above | Generator, 12 teams |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks in one cycle | 11 | 11 |
| Matches per week | 6 | 6 |
| Every pair once | Yes | Yes |
| Double bookings | None | None reported by its conflict check |
| Tee slot per match | Not assigned | Assigned and spread across teams |
| Front or back nine per match | Not assigned | Optional, balanced across teams |
| Position rounds | Not shown | Optional, last weeks of the season |
Page-by-page grids for neighboring sizes are at the 11-team, 12-team and 13-team pages. For the method itself with a smaller 8-team grid, see how to make a golf league schedule.
Worked example: balancing tee slots and nines for 12 teams
Eleven matches cannot split evenly over six tee slots, and 11 cannot split evenly over two nines. 11 / 6 is 1.83 per slot and 11 / 2 is 5.5 per nine. So the target is every team within one or two of even, not perfect.
Here is the balance the generator produced with six tee slots, one match per slot, and a nine assigned to each match. Slot 1 is the earliest tee time and slot 6 the latest.
| Team | First tee (slot 1) | Last tee (slot 6) | Front nine | Back nine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 1 | 6 | 5 |
| 2 | 2 | 2 | 6 | 5 |
| 3 | 1 | 2 | 5 | 6 |
| 4 | 2 | 3 | 6 | 5 |
| 5 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 6 |
| 6 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 6 |
| 7 | 1 | 2 | 6 | 5 |
| 8 | 2 | 1 | 6 | 5 |
| 9 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 6 |
| 10 | 2 | 1 | 6 | 5 |
| 11 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 6 |
| 12 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 6 |
Check the arithmetic. Each week has one first-tee match with 2 teams in it, so 11 weeks x 2 teams = 22 first-tee starts. The first-tee column adds to 22. The last-tee column also adds to 22. Each team's front plus back equals 11. Every team starts first once or twice. One team (Team 4) gets the last tee three times, which is the widest gap in the table. A commissioner who sees that can swap two matches in one week by hand.
Notice what the table shows: nobody is stuck in one slot all season, and the nines split 6 and 5 for every team. A simple rule like "shift everybody down one slot each week" does not give you this.
How tee times and sunset change the plan
Six matches a week means six groups if each match is a foursome. The R&A's Pace of Play Manual advises at least 8 minutes between two-balls, at least 10 for three-balls and 11 to 12 for fourballs, as reported by the Golf Club Managers' Association. Take a 5:00 first tee and a gap of 10 minutes. The last group tees off at 5:00 plus 5 gaps x 10 minutes = 5:50. At 12 minutes it is 6:00.
Now add the round. If a foursome needs about 2 hours 15 minutes for nine holes (a league assumption, set yours from your own course), the last group at 12-minute spacing finishes at 8:15 pm. Sunset in Minneapolis on September 15, 2026 was 7:23 pm and on September 29 it was 6:57 pm, so a 12-team league with a 5:00 start is playing in the dark by the third week of September.
A real course league page shows how a course handles it. As of October 2026, the City of Winnipeg lists its 9-hole men's league starting at 5 p.m. with tee times every 7 and 8 minutes. Two fixes for 12 teams:
- Start earlier in the last month of the season.
- Split the nines. Send half the matches to the front and half to the back at the same time, so two groups tee off per slot. With 6 matches and 4 tee slots, the generator puts two matches in each of two slots, so only a split-nines setup like this keeps those groups off the same holes.
A 15-week season plan: cycle, makeup, position rounds
Eleven weeks leaves a short season. A common shape is the full cycle, a spare week, two position rounds, and a rain date. Here is a 15-week plan for a Tuesday league starting May 4, 2027.
| Weeks | Dates | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 11 | May 4 to July 13 | Round robin, 6 matches a week |
| 12 | July 20 | Makeup week for rained-out nights |
| 13 | July 27 | Position round 1 |
| 14 | August 3 | Position round 2 |
| 15 | August 10 | Rain date for the finale, otherwise a wind-up night |
Check the count: 11 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 15 weeks, and May 4 plus 14 weeks lands on August 10.
A position round pairs teams by standing. With 12 teams that is 1st v 2nd, 3rd v 4th, 5th v 6th, 7th v 8th, 9th v 10th and 11th v 12th, six matches again, with the top pair on the last tee. Since every team has met every other by week 11, a position round repeats a pairing. That is the point: it matches teams of similar results.
Gimme's generator builds position rounds as the last weeks of the season, with seeds filled in once the standings are final. Its one-tap rain-out can move a replay to a make-up week before the position rounds. If lightning stops a night, the National Weather Service says to stay in shelter at least 30 minutes after the last thunder. Our rain-out help page covers what to do with the result.
Scenario: a team drops out at week 4
Say Team 7 quits after three weeks. Look at the grid. Team 7 played Teams 6, 4 and 2 in weeks 1 to 3. Its remaining games would have been Team 11 (week 4), 9 (5), 1 (6), 5 (7), 3 (8), 12 (9), 10 (10) and 8 (11).
That makes the rest of the grid easy. The 8 teams that were due to play Team 7 now have a bye in exactly that week, and there is still one bye in each of weeks 4 to 11. You do not rebuild the schedule. Keep the grid and write what a bye is worth.
| Rule for the missing match | What Team 11 gets in week 4 | Who it favors |
|---|---|---|
| Forfeit win | Full win, 2 points | Teams with weak results so far |
| Fixed half value | 1 point | Neutral, but ignores form |
| Average points | Its points per match so far | Teams are paid what they have earned |
The scoring here is 2 points for a win, 1 for a halved match and 0 for a loss, the usual match-play points setup. Under Rule 3.2, a match is won by leading by more holes than remain, by concession or by disqualification, and a halved hole is one played in the same number of strokes. That rule covers holes inside a match, not a team that never shows up, so your own rule has to.
Here is the difference. Each team has played 3 matches by week 4:
| Team | Points after 3 matches | Forfeit (+2) | Fixed (+1) | Average | Forfeit minus average |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 6 | 8 | 7 | 2.00 | 0.00 |
| B (Team 11: W, T, W) | 5 | 7 | 6 | 1.67 | 0.33 |
| C | 3 | 5 | 4 | 1.00 | 1.00 |
| D | 0 | 2 | 1 | 0.00 | 2.00 |
A forfeit win is a gift to the weakest teams: Team D goes from 0 points to 2 for not playing. Average points leaves the standings alone. The other thing to settle is Teams 6, 4 and 2, who actually played Team 7. Either keep those results and note that Team 7 was in the league, or void them so everyone has the same 10 real matches (11 teams x 10 opponents). Voiding means a maximum of 20 points per team, not 22, so rank the table on points per match. Write the choice into your league rules before week 1, and see how a sub might take the open place rather than dropping the team.
Decision table: an 11, 14 or 16 week season
| If your league | Season length | How the weeks break down |
|---|---|---|
| Plays one cycle, fits a short calendar, and accepts a skipped rain-out | 11 weeks | 11 round robin weeks, no spare. Any rain-out is dropped or doubled up |
| Wants a champion decided by a finale with a little slack | 14 weeks | 11 round robin, 1 makeup, 2 position rounds |
| Plays a full summer and expects holidays and weather | 16 weeks | 11 round robin, 2 position rounds, 2 makeup or holiday weeks, 1 wind-up night |
Arithmetic: 11 + 1 + 2 = 14, and 11 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 16. A 16-week length is not unusual: Winnipeg's men's league page, read October 2026, lists 16 weeks beginning May 14, 2026, and 15 Thursdays after May 14 is August 27, the wind-up date it lists. Do not fill the extra weeks by replaying a few early weeks. That has some pairs meeting twice and others once. If you want two full cycles, you need 22 weeks, then position rounds on top.
If you have 11 or 13 teams instead, the cycle is 11 or 13 weeks with one bye a week. Use the 11-team or 13-team pages for those grids.
Handicaps and the 12-team schedule
The schedule does not change if you play with strokes, but your results do. Strokes in a match come from each golfer's playing handicap, which under the Rules of Handicapping comes from a course handicap and an allowance. An official handicap index is the average of the lowest 8 of the most recent 20 score differentials. Gimme calls its own number a league handicap, and it is for league play only.
Commissioner checklist for a 12-team league
- Confirm 12 teams and put the name next to each number.
- Copy the 11-week grid or generate it, and keep one master copy.
- Choose the tee interval and first tee, then count back from sunset for September.
- Assign tee slots and nines so no team has the last tee more than twice if you can help it.
- Pick the season length from the decision table and mark holidays.
- Write the bye and forfeit rule.
- Write the rain-out rule.
- Publish, print, and re-send when anything changes.
To go from grid to weekly pairings and standings, Gimme's scheduling does it with the first 3 league rounds free and no card.
