Stableford and quota points calculator

Stableford gives points on every hole against par, so a bad hole costs you nothing worse than zero: 0 for a double bogey or worse, 1 for a bogey, 2 for a par, 3 for a birdie and 4 for an eagle, with the most points winning. Quota, also called Chicago, scores points on your gross score and compares the total with a quota of 36 minus your course handicap. This calculator scores either format, net or gross, for 9 or 18 holes.

Scores

Type each golfer’s gross score. Leave a hole blank for a pick-up, which scores the lowest points. Strokes is what each golfer receives for these holes (their course handicap), and SI is the stroke index of each hole, 1 being the hardest. Type +2 for a plus handicap.

How it works

In Stableford, each hole is scored on its own against par. In the net game, the golfer first subtracts the strokes received on that hole, which land on the hardest holes first by stroke index, and then the net score earns points. Add up the holes and the highest total wins. A pick-up scores zero, which is why Stableford keeps the pace of play moving: once a hole is lost, the golfer can pick up.

Quota works the other way round. The handicap is not used on the holes at all. Every golfer scores points on the gross score, 1 for a bogey, 2 for a par, 4 for a birdie and 8 for an eagle, and then compares the total with a personal quota. The quota is 36 minus the course handicap for 18 holes, or 18 minus it for nine. Beat your quota and you are plus; fall short and you are minus. The plus or minus decides the winner.

  1. Net score on a hole = gross score minus the strokes received on that hole. Gross Stableford uses the gross score as it is.
  2. Stableford points on a hole: 0 for double bogey or worse, 1 bogey, 2 par, 3 birdie, 4 eagle and 5 albatross, measured against par. Modified Stableford pays 8, 5, 2, 0, -1 and -3 for the same results, best to worst.
  3. Stableford total = the sum of the hole points. The highest total wins.
  4. Quota points on a hole use the gross score: 0 for double bogey or worse, 1 bogey, 2 par, 4 birdie and 8 eagle.
  5. Quota = 36 minus the course handicap for 18 holes, 18 minus it for nine. Plus or minus = quota points minus quota, and the highest plus or minus wins.

Enter the strokes each golfer receives for the holes played, the par of each hole and the stroke index, then type the scores. Leave a hole blank for a pick-up. In a gross game the strokes are ignored: Stableford is scored on the gross score, and quota is played from scratch with a full quota of 36 or 18.

Worked example: three golfers, nine holes

Three golfers play the front nine, which is par 36. The strokes they receive are Pat 4, Lee 9 and Sam 0. The stroke index of holes 1 to 9 is 5, 1, 7, 3, 9, 2, 6, 4, 8. The table shows each score, the strokes received on the hole as dots, and the points earned.

Net Stableford: Pat scores 17 points, Lee 16 and Sam 18. Sam wins with 18, because two birdies and a card full of pars add up to more than steady bogeys, even with strokes. The same cards as a gross Stableford game give Pat 13, Lee 7, Sam 18.

Quota: the quotas are Pat 14, Lee 9 and Sam 18, which is 18 minus the strokes each receives. The gross quota points are 13, 7 and 20. That makes Pat -1, Lee -2 and Sam +2, so Sam wins again, and the margin is much wider because quota pays 4 for a birdie.

When to use it

  • For a weekly league with a wide range of handicaps, where a bad hole should not end a golfer’s day.
  • For a Chicago or quota night, to settle who beat their quota and by how much.
  • To check a scorecard at the clubhouse before the prizes are handed out.
  • To compare formats. Type one set of scores and switch between Stableford, modified Stableford and quota.

Questions

How many points do you get in Stableford?

In standard Stableford a double bogey or worse scores 0, a bogey 1, a par 2, a birdie 3, an eagle 4 and an albatross 5. In the net game these are measured after the strokes you receive on the hole.

How do you calculate quota points in golf?

Score points on your gross score on each hole: 1 for a bogey, 2 for a par, 4 for a birdie and 8 for an eagle, with 0 for anything worse than a bogey. Subtract your quota, which is 36 minus your course handicap, to get plus or minus.

What is the difference between quota and Chicago?

The names are used for the same format in many leagues: points on the gross score against a quota of 36 minus the course handicap. Some groups play Chicago with their own point values, so confirm the table before you start.

What is a 9-hole quota?

For nine holes the base quota is 18 and the course handicap is the strokes for the nine. A golfer with a 9-hole course handicap of 6 has a quota of 12.

What is modified Stableford?

Modified Stableford rewards aggressive play and penalizes big numbers: 8 for an albatross, 5 for an eagle, 2 for a birdie, 0 for par, -1 for a bogey and -3 for a double bogey or worse. This calculator offers it next to the standard table.

Does a pick-up score zero in Stableford?

Yes. A blank hole is treated as a pick-up and earns the lowest points on the table, which is 0 in standard Stableford. Modified Stableford gives -3.
